This is a short book, but it felt like it took me a long time to read through it. It can come across as kind of preachy and it is a bit more philosophical than I normally like to read.

The story is about a little black fish that decides it wants to find out what is at the end of the stream that it lives in. Its mother and the other fish living nearby discourage it from leaving its home. The same reasons for staying seemed to come up every time the little black fish encounters a new animal or group of fish. The moral behind the story is nice and it does encourage the reader to think for themselves.

The writing is a bit cumbersome though. This is an adaptation of a children's story by Samad Behrangi. Part of the problem I have with the writing may be the particular translation used here. I am not a big fan of the art either. There are times where it can be quite wonderful, but for the most part I didn't feel like it added much to the story. The slow pacing and the amount of repetition used in such a short book are the main reasons I didn't enjoy it though.

This book tells a story that both kids AND adults can relate to. The colors and layouts are magnificent! I found myself stopping in the midst of the story many times to simply enjoy the sumptuous detail on the pages. The message is also one that everyone can relate to - Dont be afraid to strike out on your own and test your limits no matter what others may say. Great book!
My mother first told me the story of The Little Black Fish when I was very young, and I remember presenting it as a book report in elementary school. As a kid, I loved the adventure and journey the Little Black Fish went on. Now, years later, reading this new translated version, with its amazing art work, I was not only taken back to my early memories, but also now see the story in an entirely new light. The decisions an individual makes, the chances we take, and the ever present yearning we all have for life and answers. These adult themes are all encompassed in a simple, beautifully written story about a little fish and the animals he meets on the river. It will be great to read to your kids, and enjoy yourself.
I normally don't like books with words but i like this one
The little black fish is one of very few books with no age limit. It addresses children by means of the characters and the world they are more familiar with, but is actually meant to be read by everyone. It is not just a simple story, but a guide to action.

It is possible to categorize the book into sections due to the behavior progression of the main character, The Little Black Fish

"Dynamism"; The story starts with describing the static situation of the brook where the hero lives in. The life of residents and consequently his, as a part of that community, has been repeated throughout centuries, repeating day, repeating night, repeating life.

"Progression"; when just one and only one among the community progresses in thought to the extent that he does not accept the status quo.

"Determination" when he decides to do whatever he can, to change the existing situation, no matter how far the goal is.

"Leadership"; when he becomes a leader for the people accompanying him.

And

"Success".
Original book is considered a master piece of children literature in Iran (where this book was originated). Bizhan Khodabandeh in his adaptation of this book in comic form also can be considered a master piece. Well designed, well written and beautiful art work. I highly recommend this book.
A beautifully illustrated retelling of a well-known Persian children's story, Little Black Fish is about a grandmother fish who imparts a lesson to her children and grandchildren. Little Black Fish reminds readers to be brave, to question authority, and to learn things for yourself. I loved it as much as my children did.
The Little Black Fish a very lovely book. It teaches us that you can decide you are tired of comfortable conformity and and strike out on your own despite the protests of others then you can make change for yourself and others and become a legend for others to follow. The illustrations are beautiful, they have the 1962's vibe and so colorful and vibrant. I highly recommend it. I was given this book to read by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
