The Iron Legends An Anthology The Iron Fey Julie Kagawa Books

Return to the world of fairies and magic in "The Iron Legends", a series of short stories set in the world of the Iron fey. Follow Meghan Chase and Ash as they are pursued by the Big Bad Wolf throughout the Nevernever, or accompany Puck as he sneaks Ash into the heart of the Summer Court on a retrieval mission for the Exile Queen Leanansidhe. In the final tale, Queen Meghan is given a prophecy warning that her firstborn child will bring endless grief, setting the stage for the "The Call of the Forgotten" series. A glossary and "Guide to the Never Never" round out the book.

Originally released as e-book novellas, the stories contained in "The Iron Legends" acting as bridges connecting the novels of the series to each other. When placed in chronological order, the stories should be read thusly:
The Iron King
- Winter's Passage*
The Iron Daughter
The Iron Queen
- Summer's Crossing*
The Iron Knight
- Iron's Prophecy*
The Lost Prince

* = stories found in "The Iron Legends"

I think that my biggest criticism of this book is that the material is largely covered in the original novels. For example, if the "Guide to the Never Never" looks familiar, that's because it was originally printed in The Iron Knight. This version has been updated and expanded, but it's still largely the same text. About half of the first short story, "Winter's Passage", is C&P'd from the early chapters of The Iron Daughter.

The other two stories, thankfully, are more original, supplementing the novels instead of repeating them. I really enjoyed "Summer's Crossing", a tale told from the point of view of Puck. It's a quest adventure, and much more light-hearted and playful than the rest of the series. It's a refreshing change. "Iron Prophecy" may not be as fun, but it's probably the most essential of the three novellas, because it helps explain Meghan's actions in the years between The Iron Knight and The Lost Prince, which in turn completely changes her character.

I read this book alongside the novels, reading each story at the appropriate time. It isn't essential reading - well, "Iron Prophecy" might be - but it was an entertaining way to get a fresh perspective on events as they unfold. I saw one reviewer describe this as "a gift to Iron Fey fans" from the author, and that's pretty much what it is. It even has little drawings that Kagawa drew of the characters, which I thought was pretty funny since the characters looked pretty different from how I'd imagined them - or the models that the publisher picked for the cover.

The Iron Legends An Anthology The Iron Fey Julie Kagawa Books Reviews

All right, so I have been a fan of The Iron Fey series since I picked up the first book; And to my surprise I had read through almost the first three books in the series without ever knowing that there were novellas in between. Once I was caught up on the little side stories of The Iron Legends I was able to continue into The Iron Knight (Which was, in fact, an unexpectedly FANTASTIC book; seeing as how I am usually single-minded when it comes to reading through a different character's perspective) and read Iron's Prophecy, which had me shedding a few tears at the end. So please if you haven't read the novellas, there is still hope! Make sure to get the novellas because they contain vital information for Julie Kagawa's future companions of The Iron Fey series!
This is one of the best YA series out today. The writers imagination is out of this world. This series keeps you hooked and entertained from the first sentence and each book in the series leaves you begging for more. If you like YA supernatural/ fae stories; this series is a must have.
A must for any fan of the Iron King series. There not too essential to the series, just nice little bonuses. However, I highly recommend that you at least read Iron's Prophecy if you wish to read the 'Lost Prince' series. It has a foreshadowing in it that might be helpful through the first book and the rest of this series.

I enjoyed each novella! Winter's Passage is when Ash starts mentally withdrawing on his and Meghan's journey to the winter court between The Iron King and The Iron Daughter.

Summer's Crossing is all about Puck and well, who doesn't love Puck! So I loved the chance to see through his eyes for a while, even if it was just through a short novella.

Iron's Prophecy is Meg's POV again, and it's after The Iron Knight and tells you how she's doing ruling the Iron kingdom, and leads to a foreshadowing of the next branch-off series of The Iron King series called 'The Lost Prince' series which follows Ethan, Meg's little brother, all grown up and bitter. haha )

The novella's may not be essential, but there nice little bonuses to the Iron King series and a nice foreshadowing to the Lost Prince series. I recommend them! There nice, short, reads that you'll enjoy if you love this series.
Winters Passage takes place between the 1st and 2nd book. It is just about Megan and Ash (no puck) and their journey to the Winter kingdom. (Ash promised Mab to bring her and Megan promised Ash if he helped save her little brother she would go back with him. They are being followed the whole time by an unknown and the whole story is them traveling. One or two cute mushy moments if you are into that sort of thing. I really enjoyed reading this short bc it refreshed my memory about the first few books before her newest Short Iron Prophecy and her new trilogy about Megan's brother. I give this story a 3.5/5

Summer's Crossing is about Puck and Ash (No megan) and the favor that Ash owed the witch queen Lea for helping save Megan. So the story is about Ash and Puck having to work together and steal back a "violin" from the Summer Queen. Classic Puck and Classic Ash (don't you love that they both have distinct personalities?) and their creat chemistry with each other. There is also some "is puck going to double cross Ash?" moments. I really hope there is a good bit of Puck and the Cat in The new trilogy. 4/5 stars

Iron Prophecy was amazing, I loved getting to see Megan as queen, and the discussion on what Ash is... and just them being married. I love it. It starts with them making an appearance at Mab's and showing everyone they are still powerful. Then the oracle tells them something big and they have to meet up with Puck and the cat and go through obstacles to find out what it is about and how to stop it. (sorry no spoilers here) This is a big lead in too the trilogy. Which I believe comes out in October. 5/5 stars
